Behringer X32

Showcaller AI runs the Behringer X32 over its Ethernet port by voice or chat. It covers faders and mutes on the 32 input channels, the 16 mix buses and the eight DCAs. It also handles preamps, EQ, dynamics and scenes.

Overview

The Behringer X32 with Showcaller

The Behringer X32 is the full-size console of the X32 family. It has 40 input channels, 25 buses and 32 Midas-designed mic preamps on the rear panel. It also has 25 motorized 100 mm faders and a 7-inch main screen. Two AES50 ports carry up to 96 channels to stage boxes such as the S16. In addition, an expansion card adds 32 channels of USB audio for recording. The console sits at front of house or at the monitor position. You find it in conference venues, churches, theaters and rental fleets.

How Showcaller connects to the Behringer X32

Showcaller connects to the X32 through the rear-panel Ethernet port, via the Showcaller Bridge App on the show network. It uses the console’s OSC remote control on port 10023. Then the operator asks in plain words, by voice or in chat. For example, they can say mute channel 12 or bring the main mix down 6 dB for the changeover. They can also say put a little more of the lectern mic in bus 3. Each request becomes a Tool Function call on the console, such as Set channel mute, Set main fader and Set channel send to bus. The Behringer X32 and Midas M32 integration page lists them all.

Ranges that match the console

The ranges match the X32’s layout. Input channel faders, mutes, names and preamps cover channels 1 to 32. Those are the console’s own 32 rear-panel preamps. Mix bus masters and sends cover buses 1 to 16, while DCA control covers the eight DCA groups. Scenes use numbers 0 to 99, the same numbering the console uses for its 100 scenes. Because the X32 has motorized faders, a level set through Showcaller also shows on the surface. That happens when that channel’s layer is showing. So the engineer at the desk and the person asking stay on the same page.

A Behringer X32 on a corporate show

On a typical corporate show the X32 runs the room while one person handles video, lights and audio together. Showcaller lets that person rename channels for the running order and color scribble strips. They can ride the presenter DCA or switch 48V phantom power for a late-arriving condenser. They can also recall the scene for the next session, all without walking to the desk. However, Showcaller confirms with the operator before it recalls or saves a scene. The same goes for switching phantom power or changing an effects send. For full specs, see Behringer’s X32 product page.

What you can do

Run the Behringer X32 by voice or chat

  • 32 channels, 16 buses, 8 DCAs

Channel faders, mutes and names cover the X32's full input layout (Starter). Bus masters and sends for monitor and in-ear mixes cover its full mix bus layout (Starter). DCA faders, mutes, names and assignments are on Pro.

  • Preamps on the rear panel

Set and read gain and 48V phantom power on the X32's 32 local preamps (Pro). Flip polarity and set the high-pass filter between 20 and 400 Hz. Phantom power changes are confirmed first.

  • EQ and dynamics

Switch the four-band channel EQ in or out, and set any band (Pro). Set up a channel's gate and compressor too.

  • Effects and scribble strips

Send a channel into one of the four send effects (Enterprise). Set FX return and aux return levels, and colour scribble strips. Before an effects send, Showcaller checks which bus feeds that effect in the current scene.

  • Scenes 0 to 99

Recall a scene or save the current state as a named scene, using the console's own numbering (Enterprise). Both are confirmed with the operator first, because they change or overwrite the whole console.

FAQ

Questions about the Behringer X32

Can Showcaller recall scenes on the Behringer X32?

Yes, on the Enterprise plan. Showcaller recalls a saved scene (0-99, as numbered on the console) or saves the current state as a named scene. It asks you to confirm first, because a recall changes the whole console and a save overwrites the slot.

Will the X32's motorised faders move when Showcaller changes a level?

Showcaller sets the level on the console itself, so the change is on the console. The faders show it when that channel or bus is on the active layer.

Can Showcaller control preamps on an S16 stage box?

The preamp Tool Functions address the console's own preamps, 1 to 32. Stage box preamps on AES50 are not listed as a Showcaller target.

Which Showcaller plan do I need?

Starter has 14 Tool Functions for diagnostics and channel faders, mutes and names. They also cover the main stereo output and the mix buses. Pro adds 17 more Tool Functions for DCA groups, preamps and input, and channel EQ. They also cover gates and compressors. Enterprise adds FX and advanced routing and scene management (7 more). Each plan includes the Tool Functions of the plans below it.

Does Showcaller read gate settings back?

No. Showcaller can set a channel's gate. But the Get channel dynamics state Tool Function only reports whether the compressor is on. The gate state is not read.
