MA Lighting grandMA3 light

Showcaller AI sends playback commands to a grandMA3 light by voice or chat. It reaches any executor by page and number, beyond the 15 physical faders. Commands go over one-way OSC, so the console does not confirm them.

Overview

The MA Lighting grandMA3 light with Showcaller

The grandMA3 light is the work-horse of MA Lighting’s grandMA3 range. MA lists 15 motorized faders, 60 separate playbacks and 16 assignable x-keys. It also has two letterbox screens, one fewer than the full-size. MA rates it for all but the most demanding productions, with 16,384 parameters. Showcaller AI sends commands to the console through the Bridge App on your network. So the lighting desk can take cues by voice or chat. The MA Lighting grandMA3 integration page lists every function.

Beyond the 15 faders

On a grandMA3 light, a show often spreads across several executor pages. Showcaller does not need the executor on a physical fader. Instead, you name the page and the executor number. As a result, the physical faders stay free for the operator. For example, ask for Go on executor 201 on page 3, or its master fader at 60 percent. You can also switch the active page by voice. These executor and page functions come with the Pro plan. Meanwhile, sequence playback and macros come with every plan.

One-way commands on the grandMA3 light

Showcaller uses the console’s OSC input. However, the grandMA3 does not answer OSC commands. So Showcaller reports that it sent a command, not that the console ran it. That includes page changes and fader moves. In practice, the operator watches the desk, as with any one-way remote. Before the show, run a quick test cue to check the OSC line.

Sequences, macros and confirmations

In every plan, Showcaller sends Go, Go+ and Go- to a sequence. It also jumps to a cue number, pauses a sequence or turns it off. For example, ask for Go+ on sequence 1 to step to its next cue. Macros run by number, and Enterprise adds the full command line. Still, Showcaller asks first before a macro, a command-line instruction or any Off command. For full specs, see MA Lighting’s grandMA3 light page.

Connection

Connecting the MA Lighting grandMA3 light

Control protocol
OSC commands to the console's command line, sent over your show network through the Showcaller Bridge App. OSC is one-way: the console does not reply.
What Showcaller needs
The IP address of the grandMA3 station and the port of its OSC input line (8000 by default).
Console setup
In Menu > In & Out > OSC, turn on Enable Input. Then set up an OSC line for input with "Receive Command" on, and leave the OSC prefix empty.
Console software
grandMA3 software 2.x
First check
After connecting, Showcaller runs Get status. It sends a harmless test message; the console does not reply, so this shows the message was sent, not that it arrived.

FAQ

Questions about the MA Lighting grandMA3 light

Can Showcaller use executors that are not on a physical fader?

Yes. You name the page and the executor number. So the executor does not need to be on one of the 15 faders. This is part of the Pro plan.

Will Showcaller tell me if the grandMA3 light missed a command?

No. The console does not reply to OSC, so Showcaller cannot see a missed command. It reports each command as sent. Watch the desk or the stage to confirm.

Which port does Showcaller use?

The port of the OSC input line you set up on the console. MA's default is 8000.

What is different from the grandMA3 full-size?

The light has 15 motorized faders and 60 playbacks, against 30 and 120 on the full-size. It also has fewer screens and encoders. Showcaller's functions are the same on both.
