Blackmagic ATEM Constellation and Television Studio

Showcaller AI runs SDI ATEM switchers by voice or chat. That covers the 1 M/E Television Studio HD8 up to the 4 M/E Constellation. It handles switching on each M/E, aux routing, keyers and macros. It also controls recording and audio.

Overview

The Blackmagic ATEM Constellation and Television Studio with Showcaller

This page covers Blackmagic’s SDI studio switchers in two families. The ATEM Constellation family comes in 1, 2 and 4 M/E, in HD and 4K versions. The ATEM Television Studio family covers the HD8, HD8 ISO and 4K8. They range from 8 to 80 SDI inputs. The larger Constellations also have several mix effects rows, many aux outputs and a Super Source. Showcaller AI connects to the switcher over your local network through the Bridge App. Then it works with whatever hardware it finds. The Blackmagic ATEM integration page lists every function.

How Showcaller reads an ATEM Constellation

First, Showcaller reads the switcher’s topology. It counts the M/Es, aux buses and downstream keyers. It also counts the DVEs and Super Sources. That matters on these models, because cuts, Auto transitions and fade to black work per Mix Effect block. Transition settings and upstream keyers work the same way. For example, on a 2 M/E or 4 M/E ATEM Constellation, you can ask for an Auto transition on M/E 2. You can also ask for a cut on M/E 1, or fade to black on one M/E only. Showcaller lists inputs by the names set on the switcher.

Aux routing, keyers and streaming

Aux routing is where a voice assistant helps most on a big SDI frame. A Constellation can assign its SDI outputs as aux outputs, up to 48 on the 4 M/E Constellation 4K Plus. These feed confidence monitors, projectors, record decks and streaming encoders. With Pro, Showcaller reads what an aux is showing and changes it. It also puts upstream and downstream keyers on or off air with their fill and key sources. In addition, it runs macros recorded on the switcher. Television Studio models have a built-in streaming engine and recorder. On those, Showcaller starts and stops streaming and recording, and reports any disk or encoder error. However, Blackmagic’s Constellation specs list no built-in streaming or recording, so those functions do not apply there.

Super Source and Fairlight audio

With Enterprise, Showcaller arranges Super Source boxes in a preset layout. It can also set each box’s source, position and size. This works on models that have a Super Source. Blackmagic lists one on the Television Studio HD8 and 4K8 models and on the 2 M/E Constellation. The 4 M/E has two, while the 1 M/E Constellation has none. Enterprise also adds Fairlight audio. Each input gets EQ bands and makeup gain, plus a compressor, gate and limiter. Meanwhile, the master gets EQ and a compressor. The older Television Studio HD uses the classic audio mixer instead. There, Showcaller sets input and master levels (Pro). For full specs, see Blackmagic’s ATEM Constellation page.

What you can do

Run the Blackmagic ATEM Constellation and Television Studio by voice or chat

  • Every M/E by name

Cut, run an Auto transition or fade to black on the M/E you name. You can also set its transition style and rate. Showcaller first reads how many M/Es the switcher has. Starter.

  • Aux routing for SDI outputs

Ask what an aux is showing or send a source to it. Use it for monitors, projectors and encoders fed from the switcher. Pro.

  • Keyers and macros

Put upstream and downstream keyers on or off air and set their fill and key sources. Run or stop macros recorded on the switcher. Pro.

  • Super Source layouts

On models with a Super Source, arrange the four Super Source boxes in one of seven preset layouts. Or set one box's source, position and size. Enterprise.

  • Streaming and recording on Television Studio

Start and stop the built-in stream and recorder on Television Studio HD8 and 4K8 models. Get a report of any disk or encoder error. Pro.

Connection

Connecting the Blackmagic ATEM Constellation and Television Studio

Control protocol
Blackmagic ATEM network protocol over UDP on your local network, through the Showcaller Bridge App
What Showcaller needs
The switcher's IP address. No username or password is needed on the ATEM.
Network
Put the switcher's Ethernet port on the same network as the computer running the Bridge App. Blackmagic sets the switcher's IP address with ATEM Setup Utility over a direct USB connection.
Switcher software
ATEM software 9.x
First check
After connecting, Showcaller runs Get status. It then reads the topology to learn how many M/Es, aux outputs, keyers and Super Sources this switcher has.

FAQ

Questions about the Blackmagic ATEM Constellation and Television Studio

Can Showcaller control M/E 2 on an ATEM 2 M/E Constellation?

Yes. Cut, Auto transition and fade to black are addressed per Mix Effect block. So are transition style and rate, and upstream keyers. You name the M/E in the request. Showcaller reads the number of M/Es from the switcher first.

Can Showcaller change what an ATEM aux output shows?

Yes, from the Pro plan. It reads the source routed to an aux and sends a new source to it. On a Constellation, the SDI outputs assigned as aux outputs appear as aux buses.

Does Super Source work on ATEM Constellation and Television Studio?

On models that have one, from the Enterprise plan. Blackmagic lists a Super Source on the 2 M/E and 4 M/E Constellation. It also lists one on the Television Studio HD8 and 4K8 models. The 1 M/E Constellation has no Super Source. Super Source functions are also not available on the older Television Studio HD.

Which audio functions apply to my switcher?

Switchers with Fairlight audio use the Fairlight functions (Enterprise). They cover EQ and makeup gain on each input, plus its compressor, gate and limiter. They also cover master EQ and compressor. Switchers with the classic audio mixer, such as Television Studio HD, use the Audio Mixer functions (Pro). These set input level, on/off/audio-follow-video and master level.

Can Showcaller start recording on an ATEM Constellation?

Recording and streaming functions only work on switchers with a built-in recorder or streaming encoder. Blackmagic lists these on the Television Studio models, not on the Constellation.
